As the world becomes more technologically developed today, we are seeing the effects of the digital age in everything that we do – including learning. For corporate employees and students, an emphasis on eLearning, the process by which individuals are educated through an electronic component, is increasingly characterizing how information is taught and trained. However, learning through a computer or tablet can remove the human interaction element that was classic in the classroom, with eCourses struggling to capture employee and student attention.
We’re going to look at 5 ways to make eLearning effective and engaging today:
Customization: It’s easy to go into “copy and paste” mode when you’re making online content that is going to be consumed without a student physically 10 feet from you. However, be sure to fight the urge, and continue to adapt your content to each and every student or employee. Take into consideration the course format, learning objectives, and the people at the receiving end.
Story Telling: When learning is occurring through a digital device, it’s extra important to instill emotion into the layout. It’s too easy to make eLearning boring and impartial, which is why you want to include more than just data and graphs. Stories and scenarios increase the level of interest in the receivers, providing them with context that is engaging to the human mind. Also check out video creation sites, like Vyond (previously GoAnimate) and Powtoon, which are already equipped with the materials and information you need to create an engaging and interesting eLearning course today.
Brevity: Electronic learning is designed to be concise, yet effective, which means if you make 60-slide PowerPoints every week, you’re going to lose the captivation of your audience. To keep everyone stimulated, play into the brevity scenario. In a study released by a psychiatrist from Cornell University, James Cutting, it was discovered our brains have natural rhythms of attention spans, requiring stimulus changes every few seconds to remain attentive. Remember that when making your eLearning curriculum.
Human Interaction: Although you may not be in the room with those learning from your materials, you can lend human elements to the lessons to make them more digestible. For example, you can dub in male or female voice overs that provide a sense of comfort while the students/employees are alone somewhere studying through their phones or tablets. It doesn’t have to be totally anonymous.
Excitement: If you want to incentivize people to learn, there has to be some level of excitement or motivation to the eLearning programs. Some ways to instill this would be allowing the learners to have some control over their course material; incorporating social elements among participants; and providing opportunities for collaboration in the form of video chatting or writing in chatrooms.
Adding Human Emotion
At the end of the day, successful eLearning for corporate environments and schools will be a product of those willing to make it as emotionally human as possible. That’s where voice over artists and videographers will come into the picture, adding the sights and sounds of a classroom to the lesson plan, while still making it accessible online. That’s the future of education.
